S02/E32: Higher Centres - Not Developed but Revealed
Full Episode Summary
Higher Centres opens Arc VI with a claim that turns the usual picture of inner work the other way up: the higher emotional and higher thinking centres are already complete. In Ouspensky’s record of Gurdjieff’s early teaching, they are “fully developed and are working all the time.” Their work fails to reach ordinary consciousness because the lower centres are too undeveloped to connect with them. Development belongs on the receiving side, and the episode carries one simple question: what prevents me registering what is already present?
The receiving apparatus is examined through the image of a radio set placed under water, and through the formatory apparatus as a clerk with a limited vocabulary, rebuilding fine impressions from its own stock. Four obstacles are traced, each with a check the listener can use the same day: imagination, unnecessary muscular tension, emotional automatism and formatory noise. The posture of reception follows. Waiting without expectation is distinguished from waiting for something special and from sliding into dullness, anchored in Gurdjieff’s two-word instruction, “Stay here,” and in Ouspensky’s reminder that connection with the higher centres comes only through self-remembering. Positive emotion is held as a description, with a clear warning against turning it into a certificate.
The episode closes with the Clearing Space Practice: body first, then associations, then remaining, with the natural pause at the end of the out-breath as a gate. The practice is then carried into the householder’s day through brief clearings at the kettle, the traffic lights and the front door, and verified where it counts: in how you meet the people you live with.
In this episode, you will hear:
- The gap between one thought and the next, and what becomes perceptible when the noise pauses
- Why the higher centres are described as already complete, and why development belongs on the receiving side
- Ouspensky’s later caution: three descriptions of the higher centres, and why all three place the work on our side
- The radio under water: what the water is made of, and how the formatory apparatus rebuilds fine impressions from its own stock
- Four obstacles to reception, each with a practical check for everyday use
- Waiting without expectation, and the traps on either side of it: waiting for bliss or a voice, and drifting into dullness
- Positive emotion held as a description, and why Ouspensky valued control over contact
- The Clearing Space Practice, and thirty seconds on the doorstep at six o’clock
