The Automatic Reader

Delegating reading beyond the intellectual centre

Repetition begins in the intellectual centre and stabilises in the moving centre. In reading, this appears as a shift from constructed inner speech to automatic sequence. When the transfer occurs correctly, the intellectual centre is freed from mechanical processing and reading continues without the need to form each word.

Most people read at 150 to 250 words per minute using inner vocalisation. As the moving centre takes over, reading at 450 wpm becomes natural. With consistent practice, 700 wpm is achievable. The upper range of the moving centre, where meaning is received without any inner voice at all, sits between 900 and 1,200 words per minute.

The five bands show this progression directly: Vocal (60–250), Accelerated Vocalisation (250–400), Pre-formed (400–700), Reduced (700–900), and Direct (900+). Each band represents a different relationship between the intellectual and moving centres. The practice is to extend time at each band before moving to the next.
