Practice of the Week: The Thirty-Day Investigation and the Standing Question

Two instruments held together across a month: a raw behavioural log reviewed weekly, and a single sentence held lightly each day to keep the investigation alive. Begin with the Thirty-Day Investigation; let the Standing Question run underneath it from day one.

Going Deeper: The Inner Thread

Once the thirty-day investigation has narrowed to a specific candidate, the Inner Thread takes a single trait pair and asks the same question in variations for fifteen minutes, for example: what's right about being right, and what are the ways I avoid being wrong. Rehearsed answers get used up quickly; what tends to surface after them is closer to what is actually held. It is not a replacement for the thirty-day investigation. It is a faster way to test what the investigation has already found.
